Game Design
I've always enjoyed playing video games since I was a child. It had always been a dream of mine to create my own game, but I never had a clue where to start. It seemed like a completely unachievable dream until the day I found out about a piece of software called Build Box, which allowed non-coders to create games visually and intuitively.
It was still far from easy. I had to watch hours of tutorials on YouTube, and there was still a lot of trial and error. But eventually I managed to create my very own game. The concept was far from unique. The gameplay was essentially identical to the wildly popular mobile game Flappy Bird, with a few extra features that I decided to add, along with my own visuals. The game I created was Flappy Fish.
I set up an Apple Developer account so that I could upload the game to the App Store, and added in-game ads so that I could monetise it while still allowing users to play for free. My grand plan was to have a viral sensation hit game (like Flappy Bird had been), and make my fortune. Sadly, the game only ever got a handful of downloads, and I made less than $2 in revenue.
After a year, the game was removed from the App Store, as I didn't want to continue paying for the Apple Developer account when the app was making no money. So sadly the game is no longer available, but there are some images and videos of the game design and gameplay below.
Despite the lack of success, I really enjoyed the process of building the game, and I'd love to build more games in the future.
